Chapter 15

No Place Like Home

It took a while to get used to the new situation I now found myself in. I had gone from a healthy, single, teenaged girl living independently on my own, to a convalescent in a mental hospital, and now I was a recovering survivor living with a housemate that doubled as a caretaker…

It’s hard to go from living on your own to living with someone else and having to worry about them. It’s been a few days and I’m still trying to find my footing…

Sha-De had been sleeping in a guest bedroom, since Peter and Wendy wouldn’t let her sleep in the master bedroom, which was nearly unfurnished when she moved in…

What can I say? Furnishing rooms I’m not using isn’t a priority in my life. I never expected anyone would need to stay over, okay?

It was during lunch that I had a breakthrough…

“These are good! What are they?” I asked, referring to the fruity concoction Sha-De had made. They were like fruity pieces of paper, but chewier.

“It’s called fruit leather,” she replied, shrugging a shoulder. “You take some fruit, puree it, then put it in a food dehydrator, or an oven on low heat. When I saw your food dehydrator, I couldn’t resist making some. Hope you don’t mind.”

“I don’t mind!” I smiled. “I usually make home-made jerky with it, but these are good, too!”

“You make your own jerky?” she asked, looking surprised.

“Oh, sure!” I enthused, happy to be on a topic I knew a lot about. “My blood doc says I should eat protein whenever I can, and jerky is a good, meaty, snack!”

“I heard you had some kind of blood condition…” she mused, inviting me to elaborate.

“It’s a super-rare, freaky, blood-type,” I shrugged. “It tends to make me anemic with symptoms similar to hemophilia…”

“I assume you keep blood-stop powder on hand?” she asked, looking concerned.

“In almost every room,” I told her, pointing to a small cupboard in the corner.

“Good to know!” she nodded, approvingly.

“So, I was thinking that I might make you a meal, for a change,” I suggested.

“Oh? What did you have in mind?” she asked, sounding intrigued.

“Probably steak and potatoes,” I answered, trying for nonchalant. “Maybe a salad, if you insist…”

“You think you’re up to it?” she asked, sounding a little clinical.

“I’ve been itching for a good steak since I woke up…” I confessed, feeling a little embarrassed. “Hospital food gets old, real quick!”

Sha-De chuckled at this, nodding in agreement.

“I’ve been told that my cooking is really good!” I added for good measure, perhaps a little immodestly.

“I could drive you into town to help you run your errands,” she suggested with a small smile.

“That’d be great!” I cheered.

“Then let’s do it!” she commanded, getting up.

I grabbed my purse, insisting that I would pay for everything, as well as a small cooler that I could store the meat in, and I walked out to her SUV, storing the cooler in the back before getting into the front passenger seat.

“Where to first?” she asked, starting the car.
